The training is provided under a three year pilot project from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, and the Manukau Institute of Technology in New Zealand.

It will lead to a new qualification, a Certificate in Technical Skills according to a government press release.

The initiative aims to encourage unresponsive students to stay in the school system longer and further their education through vocational pathways.

The Education Minister Loau Kenneth Sio said they wanted to discourage students from dropping out of school and this is an option designed to help them realise their potential.
