Nearly 800 diabetes-related amputations were carried out last year in Fiji.
FBC news reports 791 amputations were done in 2016.
That's an increase of 121 cases from 2015.
Assistant minister for health and medical services Alex O'Connor revealed the figures during the launch of a diabetes registration drive.
Mr O'Connor says it was a clear indication that there was a need for an alternative measure to contain the avalanche.
He said it was also necessary for people living with diabetes to take ownership and be actively involved in the management of their health.
