A teenager has died in a Southern Highlands hospital in Papua New Guinea following election-related violence in the prime minister's electorate.
The clash between supporters of rival candidates in Ialibu-Pangia district with bush knives and other weapons is blamed for the death of a grade 10 student in Mendi General Hospital.
Two others were seriously injured in the violence which was sparked when tensions spilled over after a peace ceremony between the factions failed last Saturday.
Police were reportedly unable to attend to the fighting because they were consumed with assisting the election process, which is still at the vote counting stage in some parts of Southern Highlands.
Prime minister Peter O'Neill was declared winner of the election in Ialibu-Pangia electorate several days ago.
