Vanuatu has made history by becoming the first country in the Pacific to register 1,000 certified organic farmers.

Theresa Fox from Pacific Organic and Ethical Trade Community, or POETCOM, said Vanuatu promoted the initiative of going organic and produced organic agricultural products.

The biggest number of certified farmers come from Tanna Coffee using 700 organically certified growers.

Two other associations on Tanna also use certified farmers.

The others come from Epi, Efate, Malekula and Santo.

Ms Fox said POETCOM, which began with only five member countries spearheaded by Vanuatu, now had thousands of farmers spread across 44 Pacific island countries.

She said to become an organically certified farmer, one must meet strict Pacific Organic Standard Guidelines.
