Mr Salwai's announcement coincided with Children's Day, which was marked in Vanuatu today.

Thousands of children marched through Port Vila, while parents took part in special programmes one of shich included providing meals for children in every home.

Churches called on parents to honour their children on Children's Day.

Last year, also on Children's Day, the government made the same announcement - of free schooling to year ten - but it did not give a start date.
