Papua New Guinea has imposed a moratorium on all new applications and extensions of working resident employment visas for foreigners engaged in small and medium sized enterprises.

The Post Courier reports that the acting chief migration officer Solomon Kantha said the moratorium targeted the retail sector.

He said the moratorium was a result of concerns raised in parliament and by the general public over the increased number of non-citizens employed by small to medium sized businesses in jobs that are reserved for locals.

Mr Kantha said the moratorium would remain in place until the completion of consultation with stakeholders and government departments.
