Status quo in Cook Islands after by-election

A by-election in the southern Cook Island of Mangaia has resulted in a win for the opposition Democratic Party, retaining the current status quo.

Democrat Tony Armstrong polled 45 votes to the 32 gained by Cook Islands Party candidate Oromai Harry.

13 seats in the legislature are held by the ruling Cook Islands Party and 11 by the coalition opposition of the Democrats and One Cook Islands

Chief Electoral Officer Taggy Tangimetua said six declaratory votes were yet to be counted.
