Tonga's government is to install more than 100 sirens nationwide as part of an upgrade of disaster management systems.

The Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni said $US25 million will be spent over the next three years.

Weather stations would be upgraded as part of the project and Mr Sovaleni said there would also be a consolidation of disaster and weather agencies.

"We believe in building our resilience and actually getting our preparedness up to a certain level. Also upgrading our systems, thats including early warning systems, computer systems, data basing and so forth."

"We're building a new office complex to actually house relevant stakeholders so that they are close to each other and hopefully having better information sharing and hopefully having a better overall view," he said.

Siaosi Sovaleni said the World Bank and Asian Development Bank are contributing funds towards the project.
