The Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea have been outclassed in their opening round matches at the Women's Rugby League World Cup.

The Moana were thumped 58-4 by hosts and defending champions Australia in Sydney.

The Jillaroos led 36-0 at halftime but the visitors showed improvement in the second spell, with Chantelle Inangaro Schofield managing a consolation try in the 72nd minute.

The PNG Orchids scored first against England after Naomi Kaupa pounced on a loose ball and, after going behind, regained the lead later in the half when fellow centre Anne Oifua got on the end of a kick but were ultimately overwhelmed 38-8.

Dennis Miall said they didn't perform to their best.

"We didn't do the little things that we were supposed to do right and that's where we let down ourselves for that matter," he said.

"I expect the girls to do well. It's our second international match out of PNG and the girls did well, put up a very good fight against a well-established side as England."

PNG are back in action on Sunday against Canada, who were thrashed 50-4 by New Zealand in their first match, while the Cook Islands take on the Kiwi Ferns.
