Police had been responding to a call that people were throwing cherry-bombs at the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority facility when shots were fired from a nearby field.

The shots shattered the back window of the vehicle and left a gaping hole in one door.

Police commissioner Le'i Sonny Thompson said they would be doing all they can to catch the perpetrator.

"I am appealing to you the general public that if you have any information about a person or persons who has committed this cowardly and violent attack on the life of police officers, we are asking for your help."
