Heavy rain and strong wind warnings have been issued for Fiji as a tropical storm brews in the waters to the country's northwest.

The tropical disturbance -- called TD04F -- is currently to the far northwest of Fiji, moving slowly in a southeast direction.

Forecasters say it is unlikely to develop into a cyclone, but heavy rain and strong wind warnings have been issued for much of Fiji.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says it is anticipated to pass close to Fiji this weekend as a tropical depression, bringing severe weather.

It says communities in flood prone areas should remain on alert this weekend.
