Group set up in Samoa to boost recycling

A new association has started up in Samoa for businesses wanting to commit to recycling.

Samoa's Recycling and Waste Management Association is thought to be the first of its kind in the Pacific and is a response to the Cleaner Pacific 2025 strategy.

The association's plan to reduce and manage waste in Samoa is linked to ocean pollution and Samoa's close proximity to coastal and marine spaces.

Scientists from Australia have noted that every year more than 300 million tonnes of plastic produced worldwide is not recycled, and that plastic waste can travel across international borders, in particular in the South Pacific.

The Managing Director of Samoa Waste Management Marina Keil said she hoped a region wide recycling association would be the next development.
