A 21 year-old French Polynesian man has been given a six-month jail sentence for assaulting a policeman.
Radio1 in Tahiti reports the incident happened in the early hours of New Year's Day when police were trying to end a mass brawl involving about 30 people.
In the fight, a bicycle was thrown at the policeman who was about to use a tear gas bomb to separate the two sides.
The bicycle reportedly hit the device and caused it to explode, injuring him.
Radio1 says two witnesses identified the 21 year-old as the perpetrator.
However, the convicted man denied having thrown the bicycle and the policeman said in the commotion he could not identify who had thrown it.
