France restates commitments to New Caledonia

6:56 am on 8 January 2018

The French High Commissioner to New Caledonia has restated France's role in 2018 which will be marked by an independence referendum.

In comments ushering in the new year, Thierry Lataste expressed confidence ahead of the challenges while acknowledging the apprehension widely felt over what the outcome will be.

He stressed that security will be improved to counter concern over car thefts, break-ins and youth crime.

Mr Lataste said this was in line with the plans tabled by the French prime minister during his visit last month.

He also said French support this year includes development contracts worth $US 80 million.

In March, the signatories to the Noumea Accord are due for a last meeting and in May, the French President Emmanuel Macron is due for an official visit.
