The Northern Marianas Housing Corporation says despite the recent economic upswing, homelessness remains a problem on the islands.

The Corporation said Saipan alone had 672 individuals who were literally homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

An environmental officer with the Corporation Jacob Muna said these people were living on the streets, in dilapidated housing, or live by the beach, where it is unsafe.

Compounding the problem, he said, was that the CNMI had no emergency shelters for the homeless.

There were a few agencies assisting the homeless but they lacked funding.
