The authorities in Wallis and Futuna will enforce a helmet law from 1 April after motorbike riders largely ignored the requirement to protect themselves.
Since last July, motorbike riders have to wear a helmet.
The public broadcaster says until the end of March, anyone caught without a helmet will have to present a proof of purchase of a helmet to the police and the fine will be waived.
Anyone caught twice and anyone stopped without a helmet after 1 April will be fined US$50.
Retailers said they had stocked hundreds of helmets but only sold a few dozen.
