3:26 pm on 29 January 2018

Guam will make their debut in the Davis Cup tennis competition against Singapore in Asia/Oceania Zone Group Four later today.

The US Territory previously competed as part of the Pacific Oceania team but Guam is now recognised as a Class B nation by the International Tennis Federation, allowing them to compete in their own right.

Daniel Llarenas is the island's only player with previous Davis Cup experience, having represented Pacific Oceania between 2011 and 2016.

He will be joined in Oman by US based college players Christopher Cajigan and Jean Pierre Huynh and locally based teenager Mason Caldwell.

Team Captain Torgun Smith said despite being newcomers to the competition their expectations are high.

"We think we have a pretty strong team, especially at the top with the experience of Danny and Chris and JP will be a strong doubles guy for us," he said.

"We're going in not with the idea of just to show up - we have an expectation of winning some matches and hopefully we can go up to (Asia/Oceania Zone) Group Three with the Pacific [Oceania team] next year.

"That may be a very ambitious goal but why not - you play to win right?
