Sport: PNG cricketers lose build-up match to Scotland

The PNG cricket team have prepared for their world cup qualifying campaign in Zimbabwe with a loss against Scotland at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Scotland won the toss and put the Barramundis into bat.

However PNG got off to a bad start losing openers Tony Ura for 11 and Vani Vagi Morea for 12, leaving the team in trouble at 36/2 after 10 overs.

However captain Assad Vala and Lega Siaka stabilised the innings, taking PNG to 68 before Siaka was trapped LBW on 19.

Vala eventually scored 39 runs before Sese Bau top-scored with an impressive 53 as PNG was bowled out for 196 in the 47th over.

In reply Scotland reached the target in the 37th over and with the loss of only three wickets.

Vala picked up two of those to complete a tidy day, with Jason Kila grabbing the other wicket.

However neither were able to get out Scottish opener Matthew Cross, who led his side with un unbeaten century.

PNG will take on the United Arab Emirates in the first of their Group A qualifiers on Sunday
