Young rural women in Fiji have said lack of access to information and communication is a constant barrier for them.

The women were speaking out at the annual Fiji Young Women's Forum held in Labasa at the end of last month.

Audrey Seru of Diverse Voices and Action for Equality said the forum is a safe space for participants to develop leadership skills.

"Some of the barriers that rural young women face is to be included in decision making spaces," she said.

"Also, young women don't have access to the spaces. Some of the reason could be due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual characteristics, ethnicities, but people will be really saying it is due to their age."

Andrey Seru said while young urban women have access to information about their rights, they are not necessarily included in decision making.
