Fiji school closes after meningitis outbreak

A school in Fiji has closed for the rest of the week after an outbreak of meningitis.

FBC News reported nine students at Navesau Adventist High School have been affected so far and five of them had been admitted to hospital.

Health authorities had declared an outbreak of the bacterial infection earlier this month after 18 cases were reported throughout the country during the first eight weeks of this year

FBC News reported the school in Tailevu province which neighbours the capital Suva has more than 300 hundred hostel and day students.

Students have been told to return to school next week with parental consent for the meningococcal vaccination.
