The French High Commission in New Caledonia has reminded prospective voters in the November independence referendum that they have until the 20th of April to enlist on the general roll.

Such a registration at the local town hall is necessary to be allowed onto the restricted roll which will be used for the referendum.

Those already on the general roll have until the 18th of June to finalise their inscription on the referendum roll, reserved for long-time residents.

The eligibility question had been contentious for years but a deal was struck in Paris in November which cleared the way for another 11,000 people to enrol.

Voters will be asked whether they want New Caledonia to assume full sovereignty and become independent.
