The Director Meteorological Services, Ravin Kumar said with evolving weather and climatic patterns, the Office is ensuring it is equipped with the latest technology.

The weather office currently has two radars in Labasa and Nausori.

Mr Kumar said the Nadi radar is undergoing an upgrade this month for which government had allocated around 900 thousand US dollars

According to him, Rotuma is also earmarked to have a new radar soon.

The Weather Office is also considering enhancing its ocean monitoring capacity to ensure correct information is relayed to the public.

Mr Kumar said this is essentially crucial now as heavy swells are affecting the coastal areas frequently.

The Weather Office is expected to make further submissions for Government or donor funding to carry out its modernisation plans.
