The head of the programme David Billington said the sessions will give the fishermen updated information and new safety equipment.

He said they were working with Niuean officials to strengthen safety messages and practical advice such as how to right a capsized canoe.

He said the programme will also be providing safety equipment including lifejackets, flares and some locator beacons.

Mr Billington said the introduction of a new search and rescue vessel to Niue last October has benefits for the fishermen.

He said with a response vessel like this located in Niue, any fishermen who gets into trouble will now know that assistance is nearby and the key thing is ensuring they have the means of calling for help.
