India's Minister of State for Health, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, is the first minister from his country to visit Tuvalu.

He met Tuvalu's Home Minister Namoliki Sualiki Neemia and discussed various issues relating to Indo-Tuvalu bilateral relations.

The Press Trust of India reported that after visiting Tuvalu's main hospital on Funafuti, Mr Choubey urged the local government to send a formal request for assistance in the medical sector.

He identified a need for establishing an effective blood bank system in Tuvalu.

Mr Choubey also handed over a cheque of $US50,000 to Tuvalu as a development partnership assistance from India, and invited Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga to visit his country.
