Five New Caledonian men have been given additional jail sentences for escaping from the territory's prison three years ago.

The public broadcaster says the five were being tried in the Noumea court while being on a video link from their current jail in France.

They were given terms of one to five years for breaking out of jail and for committing more crimes after their escape.

They committed burglaries, used weapons to make threats and stoned vehicles,

They claimed that they broke out of the prison because they wanted to farewell their families before being transferred to France.

The five will be able to be released between 2020 and 2029.

The broadcaster says a sixth man who was to be tried has been on the run since January.
