The US Geological Survey said it struck at a depth of 22km, 33km west-southwest of Vila at 8.13am local time.

Residents of Vila have told RNZ Pacific that the quake felt big, but did not last long compared to other quakes.

A staff member at the Au Bon Marché supermarket on Kumul Highway said there had been some minor damage in the store.

"Some of the lights have fallen off, and products in the shop have fallen also.

" The lights are hanging off the wall. Otherwise everyone is okay. Everyone just ran out of the office.

"Everything was ... swaying. It just started, and then it stopped."
