The resident co-ordinator said the UN was committed to serving the people of Papua New Guinea and supporting the communities affected by February's 7.5 magnitude earthquake in addressing their immediate needs.

Gianluca Rampolla said the agency's return was a testament to the commitment and dedication of staff who were ready to work in the most difficult and challenging situations to provide basic shelter, food, health and education to those recovering from the quake's effects.

He said the communities had extended a warm welcome back to the agency's staff, giving a very clear indication of the value of their work and it was a proud moment for everyone.

Mr Rampolla will be travelling to Mendi over the weekend along with the UNICEF country representative and a World Bank delegation.
