An investigation into an assault at a Cook Islands nightclub two weeks ago by an off-duty police officer has revealed the claims to be false.

The Police Commissioner Maara Tetava said the findings of the investigation have now focused the attention on a suspect identified as a visitor from New Zealand, who has since returned there.

Mr Tetava said the off-duty police officer was not involved and none of the three men accused through a Facebook post were involved in the assault.

Mr Tetava said the accusations had been ignited first on Facebook, and perpetuated by local media, tarnishing the reputation of the police officers.

He said he will be working with the New Zealand Police to verify statements pertaining to this incident and taking whatever action is necessary to hold people to account.

The commissioner said the errors in reporting and gossip on Facebook also needed to be put right.
