The 132-metre long ship Thorco Lineage was dislodged from the reef of Raroia in the Tuamotus by a French navy ship and towed to Tahiti by a ship sent from the port of Papeete.

Radio1 said five vessels were used to help the stricken ship enter the port.

The Thorco Lineage, which was carrying 20,000 tonnes of zinc, is now awaiting a large rescue vessel from the United States to be taken to a port equipped to repair it.

The ship was on a trip from the United States to Australia when it developed engine problems.
