A construction team has started clearing the area for the $NZ3.3 million project, following a ground-breaking ceremony and blessing of the site that took place in March when New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern visited the country.

New Zealand High commissioner to Nuie, Kirk Yates said the current chancery building, which is about 70 years old, was deemed unfit for purpose, and the new facilities will provide a more functional space for staff.

"So we see the construction of this chancery - other than the old one being past its used-by date - the new chancery will certainly highlight New Zealand's commitment to its presence in Niue."

Mr Yates said the building will also be built to withstand a category five cyclone.

He said construction is expected to be completed early next year.
