The Manu Samoa brand is being exploited for private gain by Samoans abroad, the chair of the rugby union says.

Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, who is also the prime minister, said it happened a lot when the Manu teams were on tour, especially in the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

People held support functions to raise money for the Manu but the team often only received a small percentage of what was pocketed by the organisers, Tuilaepa said.

Meanwhile, recent amendments to the Samoa Rugby Union's constitution would show World Rugby, the sport's governing body, that Samoa was practicing good governance, Tuilaepa said.

The changes would eventually earn Samoa a seat on the World Rugby board, he said.
