Aiono pleaded guilty last month to third-degree misdemeanour assault while in uniform earlier this year.

He was earlier suspended for five days by the police commissioner Le'i Sonny Thompson who'd told local media the case was "not news".

A public outcry over the police chief's response to the case led to an investigation by the office of the Attorney General who later filed the misdemeanour charge.
