A leader in Papua New Guinea's Jiwaka says the recently created province has already gone to the dogs and has no future.

A former Western Highlands Province deputy premier and later Jiwaka leader, Yuants Kaman, has told the Post Courier Jiwaka's future is at stake because of the impact of alcohol abuse.

Mr Kaman said if the people want Jiwaka to prosper then the sale of illegal alcohol must be stopped, but he says consumption is actually on the rise.

He said small shops are mushrooming on the sides of the Highlands Highway in Jiwaka to sell illegal alcohol.

Mr Kaman said this is not the case in other provinces.
