More women, bigger opposition in Fiji parliament

Fiji's new parliament will be made up of more women and a larger opposition.

The FijiFirst government was elected to another four years in power and the Writ of Election returned yesterday.

The president Jioji Konrote received the writ marking the end of the election period at a ceremony in Suva.

He said it was now time for Fiji to come together after much fierce debate over the past few weeks.

Mr Bainimarama 's FijiFirst party has a three seat majority after losing five seats to the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA).

It won 50.02 percent of the vote and SODELPA nearly 40 percent.

Female representation has risen to 20 percent with 10 women elected to parliament.

Almost three quarters of registered voters turned out to vote.
