A Papua New Guinea jail commander has been suspended over the escape of a so-called "notorious criminal" from a hospital where he was taken to for medical treatment.

Acting Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis has confirmed that Bomana Prison commander acting Chief Superintendent Kiddy Keko has been suspended.
However, Mr Pokanis said the suspension will be lifted if no charges are laid against him.
The National newspaper reported that Tommy Baker Maeva, wanted by police for questioning over various criminal activities including the killing of two police officers, escaped from the Port Moresby General Hospital in October.
He had complained to prison authorities of a knee problem and was taken to the hospital under escort of five officers.
