Fiji's National Disaster Management Office says it will conduct tsunami drills every month.

The director of the office, Anare Leweniqila, told the Fiji Times the drills will be conducted on the 5th of every month and will challenge people to react at inconvenient times.

A drill was was conducted without warning in Suva and Lami this week to make people aware of the potential threat.

Mr Leweniqila said many people were quick to evacuate the test areas on Wednesday, which showed they were aware of the systems in place for an emergency evacuation.

Later that same day, Fiji was issued with a live warning from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre after strong earthquakes near New Caledonia.

The quakes caused a tsunami surge which damaged buildings on Vanuatu's southern most island, Aneityum.
