Talks are already happening with two companies, including Virgin Orbit, owned by billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

Guam International Airport's executive, manager, Chuck Ada, told Pacific Daily News flights could happen as soon as next year.

Outgoing governor Eddie Calvo said in an address posted to social media that feasibility studies for the space port were underway.

"We've been working with the Federation Aviation Administration to accomplish that objective and are hoping to complete this work by next year. I'm looking forward to seeing this become a new industry for Guam.

"Imagine our children being a part of space exploration and the next level of communications and technology."
