Several inmates in French Polynesia will get a bigger compensation package after a successful appeal over their detention conditions.

This follows a series of rulings released by the appeal court in France.

Some inmates of the Nuutania jail will now get up to four times more money for being locked up in one of the most overcrowded detention facilities operated by France.

In one case the sum has been raised to $US30,000.

Conditions for prisoners in French Polynesia improved last year when a new jail was opened.

At Nuutania, inmates often were three times the number it was built for, with up to four prisoners sharing nine-square metre cells.
