A special election will be held in the Northern Marianas within 30 days to fill the vacant Precinct 3 seat left by the death of former vice speaker Francisco Dela Cruz.
The Saipan Tribune reports the 56-year-old republican died last weekend on Tinian.
The Commonwealth Election Commission says the special election is open to anybody, not just the six people who lost the race for Precinct 3 in November.
The 21st Legislature opens on Monday.
