Reports said only a couple dozens teachers in Tahiti followed the call to strike over comprehensive reforms being rolled out by the French education minister.

There are almost 3,800 teachers in French Polynesia.

The striking teachers are expected to be received by the French High Commission in Papeete.

The strike was widely followed across mainland France, forcing many schools across the country to close for the day.

The reforms aim to pool several levels of schooling into one unit, raising concern that small primary schools might be forced to be closed.
