The registration period closes tonight for New Caledonia's parties planning to contest the provincial elections on May the 12th.

They have to submit their lists to the French High Commission in Noumea.

As both the anti- and pro-independence side expect this year's election to be tight forces are being pooled.

The parties of pro-independence FLNKS will run with a single list in the southern province, hoping to make the inroads needed to give it a majority in Congress formed out of the three provincial assemblies.

The anti-independence side's coalition in the Loyalty Islands province has fallen apart, dampening hopes to win a foothold in what is a pro-independence stronghold.

By law the lists must also alternate male and female candidates to ensure gender parity.

Once vetted, the official lists of candidates will be made public on Saturday for the official campaign period to begin on Monday.
