Nauru law change slammed by former legal official

From , 5:04 am on 12 September 2016

A former secretary of justice in Nauru, David Lambourne, says this week's amendments to the country's passport laws are weird and a further indication of the breakdown of the rule of law.

Last week it was revealed that 20 Nauruans, including former president Sprent Dabwido who needs urgent medical care overseas, had had their passports cancelled.

All 20 had been accused of involvement in an anti-government protest 16 months ago.

This week the Passport Amendment Act was passed and Mr Lambourne told Don Wiseman it appears the Nauru Government wants to wield untrammelled power over people who speak out against it.
