French Polynesias's pro-independence leader Oscar Temaru says he's secured enough backers to contest the French presidential election.

Candidates must gain at least 500 signatures from parliamentarians, assembly members and mayors in 30 French departments and territories.

Mr Temaru says if he wins the presidential race in Tahiti it will amount to a declaration of independence.

He told Jo O'Brien where the required backing for his presidential bid has come from.
