PNG encouraged to end dependence on gas, oil and gold

Papua New Guinea's government has been urged to wean the economy off reliance on the extractives sector.

Fresh from re-election, the People's National Congress-led government's first priority is to save an economy under significant strain, according to the new Treasurer.

Charles Abel says he'll devise a plan within a hundred days of the government taking office to chart a way forward.

Director of PNG Economics, Paul Flanagan, says one of the first things he would advise is to move away from an economy dependent on the exploitation of oil, gas and minerals.

He told Don Wiseman this could be the key decision.
