MAINA TALIA: Tuvalu Climate Action Network is part of the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network action network, which is also part of the larger network- the Climate Action Network International. And we're calling to all our Pacific members, not just ESO, but with the government representatives here in Apia to stand firm to have a collective voice, one voice on climate action that we need to implement underground, ground level a national level before we head towards COP23 in November this year.
KOROI HAWKINS: And what kind of action is needed, or what kind of position is required or would you advocate for going to COP23 from the Pacific region?
MT: Well there are quite a number of things that we anticipate for our region to take serious action on. The delegation of coal mining which Australia is highly involved with. And also the new emerging issues such as seabed mining, which some of our countries have signed on for their seabed to be explored by multinational companies. So we're calling out that we should take firm action to negate all those possible exploitations on the ground and especially a call for Australia to stop exporting mine.
KH: And you're quite critical of Australia in the sense that as long as they are part of the Pacific block you think it will be a watering down, or a weakening of the Pacific's position in terms of climate change.
MT: Yes, of course. When we talk about climate change we cannot turn a blind eye to justice and it is a matter of justice. When we are facing this very critical moment for the Pacific and especially low-lying atolls.
KH: Going back to the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum which is underway, you are calling for a strong statement or a strong position to come out of the leaders meeting around 1.5 degrees position on global carbon emissions.
MT: Yes, that has been an ongoing call. By, not just from ESO, but even governments as well. But in most cases the big brother is in the room as well so I don’t know how it’s going to turn out at the end of this meeting. We are hoping New Zealand and Australia will engage with us and they will hear our voice.
