PNG Immigration minister hopeful over Manus transition

Papua New Guinea's Immigration Minister has downplayed concerns of looming security or humanitarian crises on Manus Island.

Australia's immigration detention centre on Manus is due to close tomorrow, although hundreds of refugees are refusing to move to the island's main town due to security fears.

With Canberra saying food and water services will be withdrawn at the centre tomorrow, there are fears of a humanitarian crisis.

The minister, Petrus Thomas, says he believes the transition can be done without force, and will be smooth.

He told Johnny Blades the main concern was a move by the contractor to bring in foreigners for security sub-contracting roles which are meant for locals.
