An Australian submarine missing since the early days of World War One has been found this week.

It was located in about 300 metres of water near the Duke of York Islands which lie between New Britain and New Ireland in Papua New Guinea.

At the time AE1 disappeared Australia was aiming to seize German New Guinea.

Its specific role, along with its sister submarine AE2 was to counter the German Pacific Fleet.

Don Wiseman spoke with historian, Kathryn Spurling, who has previously written about the submarine in "The Mystery of AE1; Australia's Lost Submarine and Crew" and she began by explaining a little of the history of both vessels.
