This year the University of the South Pacific is marking 50 years operation after being set up by 12 Pacific Island countries back in 1968

Emeritus professor of geography, American Randy Thaman and his Tongan wife, professor of education and culture, Konai Helu-Thaman, started teaching there back in 1974.

The couple had met while studying in California in the early 1970s before taking up posts in Suva, just five years after the university had first opened its doors.

The USP is just one of two regional universities worldwide owned by the member countries.

Don Wiseman asked Randy Thaman how well has it has worked.
