Samoa's Scientific Research Organisation has successfully produced whisky from talo, otherwise known as taro.
It is another step in a government plan to develop potential export products from local agricultural crops.
Fries made from talo, to replace imported chips, is another product being worked on.
The research agency's minister, Lopao'o Natanielu Mu'a, said scientists had developed the whisky over a few years.
