An arch critic of the Bainimarama government in Fiji says it has concocted a reason to stop him leaving Fiji if he tried to visit his dying mother.

Shailendra Raju who lives in New Zealand says Fiji's Director of Immigration confirmed to him in a letter last week that he was on a controversial list and he'd be restricted from departing the country.

Mr Raju's mother died on Thursday as he was trying to get clarification from the authorities that he could safely travel there.

Mr Raju told Sally Round the authorities referred  to a 2005 bench warrant in relation to his divorce case which has since been resolved.
